Transportation:  Mobility, Longevity, and Sustainability

The focus of this center is on applied research and applications, through the use of materials engineering and advanced manufacturing to increase the longevity, mobility, and sustainability of the Nation’s Transportation Infrastructure. The Center for Transportation and Materials Engineering addresses several objectives of the Federal Transportation Research Goals:

  • Provide Transit Research Leadership
  • Improve Capital and Operating Efficiencies
  • Improve Safety & Emergency Preparedness, and
  • Protect the Environment and Promote Energy Independence.”

Specific efforts focus on the following objectives:

  • development of lighter-weight, more fuel efficient vehicles (including cars, trucks, trains, planes, and other modes of transportation);
  • increasing the longevity of our nation’s transportation infrastructure;
  • improved bridge safety;
  • improvement of pavement-bridge interfaces.

Moreover, in addition, other areas of research and applied interest include:

  • transportation safety performance systems;
  • the use of information technology to better manage the transportation infrastructure;
  • the growing demand for increasing global transportation; including, e.g., what is the best and most efficient mix of use of different modes of transportation for particular scenarios
  • the study of rural transportation and how to improve its efficiency and, more generally, make it better serve needs of specific rural communities
  • sustainability in transportation system, including “green” vehicles;
  • pavement research; and
  • human factors.
