The chemical engineering program—supplemented with courses in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and general engineering—provides a broad preparation for design, operation, and management in the chemical, biological, pharmaceutical, and energy-conversion industries, as well as graduate study leading to research positions in industry and government and to academic careers.

The curriculum may easily be modified for students whose career objectives lie in environmental, polymer, biochemical, or biomedical engineering.  Transfer to chemical engineering from other engineering programs or from chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics may be accomplished without loss of time or credit during the first two years.

The mission of the Chemical Engineering Program at Youngstown State University is to provide a superior program in undergraduate and masters-level chemical engineering education by maintaining standards established by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc., (http://www.abet.org), as well as to prepare chemical engineering students to adapt to global and domestic competitive challenges, to provide increased support to local industries, and to improve research efforts.  The mission of the Chemical Engineering Program can be achieved by fulfilling these key strategies:

  • Offering a wide variety of electives to students according to the global trend in chemical engineering technology.
  • Increasing computer usage by students and faculty.
  • Providing real world experiences to students through laboratory experiments.
  • Conducting research with faculty in the areas commonly associated with traditional chemical engineering disciplines and their impact on the local and global environment.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary programs.
