Youngstown State University’s Office of Veteran Affairs (OVA)
The OVA was established January 2009 to advocate for veterans and to advise the university on issues affecting YSU students who are veterans. The office develops implements and monitors programs that address veterans’ issues, concerns and needs as these pertain to the university. The OVA Coordinator recruits and works for the retention of veterans at YSU.
To fulfill its objectives, this one-person office will construct and maintain data bases and statistics reflective of YSU’s veterans. The OVA will design, implement, compile and assess surveys for the purpose of program development assisting veterans to move into, through and graduation from the university.
Position Description for 1 (1300 hrs.) VA Work Study student in the YSU OVA:
Primary Duty: To assist the Coordinator in fulfilling the above objectives by
- maintaining current files on veterans indicating enrollment data such as:
status (accepted/not accepted), full-time/part time, major, etc.
- compilation of statistics and reports regarding veterans such as:
enrollment, trends, academic progress (GPA’s, retention, stop/starts)
- working in conjunction with offices on campus to compile and maintain information on veterans for reporting and tracking as to the type of GI Bill Educational Benefits received, e.g.
Montgomery GI Bill, Vietnam Era, (soon to be) Post 9/11 GI Bill, VEAP, REAP, Selected Reserve, Chapters, etc.
- organization and dissemination of VA documents and appropriate forms to veterans utilizing office services, and to assist veterans in the completion of such forms
Necessary Skills: excellent verbal and written communication excellent organization for filing and data retrieval proficient in computer word processing, data bases and spreadsheets

Position Title: Student Office Assistant
Office of Veterans Affairs
Position Description: To assist the Coordinator in the following:
- Maintaining current files on veterans indicating enrollment data such as: status (accepted/not accepted), full-time/part-time, major, etc.

Minimum Requirements: Must be VA Work-Study eligible.1
Excellent verbal and written communication.
Excellent organization for filing and data retrieval.
Proficient in computer word processing, data bases, and spreadsheets.
Must carry a minimum of 9 credit hours per semester and maintain good standing.
Must be able to lift boxes of materials.
Reports To: Coordinator of the Office of Veterans Affairs
Salary: Standard hourly rate as established by the State of Ohio Laws and the University
1currently receiving an educational benefit from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense or State agency for current or prior military service. (Chapters: 30, 31, 32, 33, 1606, 1607, NG Scholarship, TA) Excludes Chp. 33 TEB or any other programs for dependents that are not serving or have not served in the US military.
