Biohazard Safety

The University is registered with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) as a large quantity generator of infectious waste.  Biohazardous waste in the from of microbiological cultures, blood, and other body fluids that are generated from biology, medical technology, and dental laboratories throughout campus are properly treated and disposed of according to Ohio Infectious Waste Regulations.  EOHS is licensed by the State of Ohio and is approved to treat University infectious waste at a site located in Cushwa Hall.  This site is inspected by both the OEPA and the Mahoning County Health Department to assure that it is operating in full compliance with the regulations.

EOHS has also developed a Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan in accordance with OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.

All "sharps" must be placed in approved puncture-proof containers and properly autoclaved prior to discarding

Biohazard bins. Biologically hazardous material does not get mixed in with the general waste.
It has it's own receptacles in which to be placed.

All infectious waste generated on the campus of YSU must be brought to CUSHWA Hall Room 2120 to be properly autoclaved prior to disposal.
