The Benefits Area of Human Resources is dedicated to providing our employees prompt, courteous and efficient service whenever possible. It is our goal to ensure that our customers have a positive experience whenever they interact with staff members in the Benefits Area and that they achieve resolution to outstanding issues whenever possible.

Youngstown State University offers a comprehensive benefits package to full time faculty and staff. Most benefits are effective on the first day of an individual’s employment. Benefits available to employees include a complete health insurance package, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, long term disability insurance, and a retirement plan. Additionally, tuition remission is available to employees and their qualified dependents. An Employee Assistance Program is offered to benefit eligible employees and their dependents for assistance in personal, mental health, legal, financial or other issues confronting employees and their dependents. Voluntary benefits offered to employees include supplemental life insurance coverage available to the employee, spouse and dependent children, long term care insurance and tax deferred annuity programs or deferred compensation plans.

Health Plans

Youngstown State University offers a comprehensive health plan through Medical Mutual of Ohio. Single, employee plus one dependent, or family coverage is available to qualified employees. For details of the coverage, please consult the Benefits Summary. We have recently added the ability to add your older children, up to the age of 28 years old to your medical coverage. Flexible Spending Accounts

YSU offers Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (in compliance with IRS regulations) to employees interested in enrolling. The annual maximum is $2,500. Flexible spending accounts offer reimbursement for qualified non-covered health care expenses and qualified dependent day care expenses.

Life Insurance

All eligible faculty and staff are entitled to life insurance coverage equivalent to 2 ½ times their base salary up to a maximum of $250,000. This benefit is available to employees at no cost to them. Click here to view the Life Insurance Certificate.

Long Term Disability Insurance

YSU offers long term disability insurance to employees for the first five years of employment. This insurance would pay 60% of the employee’s base pay if the employee qualifies for disability. There is a 90 day elimination period.

Retirement Plans

All employees are required to elect enrollment in one of the State of Ohio Retirement systems, i.e., STRS (faculty) or OPERS (staff). Some eligible employees may also elect enrollment in an Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP) in lieu of the state plans.

Tuition Remission

Tuition remission is offered to qualified full time faculty and staff and their dependents. It is also available to some qualified part time employees. Please visit the Fee Remission Information page to access the appropriate form.

Employee Assistance Program (IMPACT Solutions)

This benefit is available to all benefit eligible employees, members of their household as well as parents and parents in law. It offers a wide range of assistance with personal and work related challenges and daily living matters. Employees have access to counselors 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Voluntary Benefits

Voluntary benefits include supplemental life insurance available for purchase by eligible faculty and staff. Click here for information on . Employees are also eligible to participate in tax deferred annuity programs or deferred compensation programs. Living Well Wellness Program

Youngstown State University provides a proactive wellness program to employees by creating an environment that will help to improve their health and health behavior patterns and produce tangible improvements in their use of health care services, reduce health-related costs, and enhance well-being.
