Attend the Quality Matters Rubric Workshop and receive your APPQM certificate. Workshop will be facilited by Jillian Javeck.
YSU Distance Education Office welcomes applications to present from educational professionals representing all levels, content areas, and specialties, as well as business and industry experts. If accepted, your presentation will be scheduled as one of the 45-minute sessions planned for the one-day conference.
The conference will provide many opportunities for interaction between Distance Education administrators, coordinators, and faculty.
The Distance Education Conference encourages the following types of submissions in any area that is related to the theme.
- Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL) for "How to Sessions"
- Panel Discussions
- Abstracts of completed or proposed research (the abstract for proposed research should include the research objectives, proposed methodology, and a discussion of expected outcomes)
- Completed research papers
- Research done by students
- Case studies
- Work-in-Progress Reports or Proposals for Future Research
- Incomplete research or ideas for future research in order to generate discussion and feedback
- Reports on Issues Related to Teaching
Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Steven Wheeler, Plymouth University
Dr. Wheeler worked for 5 years in the Educational Technology department at the College of St Mark and St John, a teacher training college in Plymouth, before joining the National Health Service in 1981. From 1981 to 1995 he set up and managed the audio visual and information technology services within both the Plymouth and Cornwall Schools of Nursing (now incorporated into the University of Plymouth's Institute of Health Studies).
In 1996 he joined the European funded RATIO project (Rural Area Training and Information Opportunities) as Training Manager. Dr. Wheeler's project team set up a network of 39 centres across the South West peninsula of England which were used by local businesses to access telematic training courses and information products.
In 1998 Dr. Wheeler joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Plymouth, where he am now based in the School of Partnerships, Enterprise and Professional Studies. Dr. Wheeler teaches a range of undergraduate and post graduate courses including the B.Ed Primary, BA Education Studies and the Integrated Masters Programme (IMP).
Dr. Wheeler is regularly invited to speak at conferences and events worldwide, usually on one of his research subjects which include e-learning, mobile learning, distance education, cybercultures, Web 2.0 based learning (blogs, wikis, podcasting and social networks) and the psychology of learning.
TITLE: Digital learning futures - In this presentation I will explore how new and emerging technologies are transforming learning in all sectors of education and training. I will analyse and critique some of the most recent research findings on the use of social media, mobile (cellphone) learning and the smart eXtended Web. I will explore the evolution of the web and provide several models of web evolution, identifying trends and movements that will indicate what we might expect in the near future.
Invited Guest Speaker:
 Dr. George Steele, Ohio Learns Network
George Steele Ph.D., is Executive Director of the Ohio Learning Network (OLN). George oversees this organization that has three primary divisions: one focused on professional development, related to using technology for learning; one focused on developing eStudent services; and a third focused on the use of technology to support these services for Ohio higher educational institutions and citizens. Previously, he coordinated and managed the eStudent services and advising issues for OLN and its catalog, OhioLearns.
George earned his Doctorate at The Ohio State University in Social Studies Education with outside areas focused on instructional and curricular development, use of learning technologies, and American history. Steele has been a member of the National Academic Advising Association for over 25 years, has held a variety of offices in that organization and has been recipient of multiple awards of recognition from it. He has published on a variety of topics such as advising undecided, major-changing students and the use of technology in learning and academic advising.
Title: Technology and Learning: A Changing Landscape - This session will provide a brief overview of changes in distance learning offered by Ohio higher educational institutions during the past decade and how new state organizational structures will continue to support it.
