INTERNSHIP DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a full-time temporary position involving various duties that permit exposure to the student’s field of study. Under close supervision of the District Environmental Coordinator, duties will include the preparation, review and/or coordination of various environmental reports, studies and/or documents necessary to obtain environmental approval/clearance for transportation projects under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process. The student will assist in conducting field reviews with other District Environmental Section personnel to identify, verify and document (e.g. field notes, photo-logs, etc.) potential environmentally sensitive areas/resources for the purpose of determining environmental impacts associated with transportation projects and other related activities. Additional duties will include the review of transportation project plan submittals and the utilization of various computer applications as they apply to accomplishing the tasks of the District Environmental Section. Student will assist in conducting highway traffic noise measurements at noise sensitive receivers (e.g., residences, schools, churches, park/recreational areas, etc.) along highway facilities during recommended traffic volume periods. Duties will include the set-up, use and monitoring of electronic noise measurement equipment, documentation of location, field, traffic and weather conditions, record noise measurement data and the preparation of noise measurement reports and/or correspondence to officials and affected citizens. When necessary, the student will also be required to perform traffic counts, during specific noise measurement periods and, with this data, adjust field noise measurements using various calculations. The student will perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor (e.g., information compilation, data entry and general clerical tasks).
QUALIFICATIONS / MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
The minimum qualifications are: Students must have completed at least the first year of college pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, biology, environmental science, geology, hydrogeology, and/or earth science. The individual must provide us with an Official College Transcript which shows they have at least a 2.0 GPA.
COMPENSATION:
The number of hours will depend on the student’s availability. Hourly compensation will be as follows based on college status: Sophomore: 30-59 semester hours completed= $12.00; Junior: 60+, Senior: 90+ semester hours completed = $13.50
