 Collecting program data and evaluating the results allows the Counseling Program to identify strengths and weaknesses in the program and determine areas to change or modify program or curriculum. The data collected is used for reports for Counseling Program faculty, Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the YSU General Education Requirement (GER) assessment.
CACREP:
The program collects and compiles the following data of all Addictions, Clinical Mental Health, College, School and Student Affairs students/applicants: the GPA/MAT/GRE Scores of the program’s applicants; the Graduated Student Survey; and the Current Student Survey. The program also collects data from community supervisors, and employers of program graduates.
NCATE:
The counseling program collects and analyzes program data to continually make improvements and meet the requirements specified by CACREP and NCATE. The School Counseling Program selected to use Taskstream as an online program to collect student’s projects from each of the school counseling courses. Taskstream allows the school counseling program to score projects on a standardized rubric and compare rubric scores between students and across semesters. The purpose is to show evidence of the work of school counseling students across their program.
Benefits of Taskstream to School Counseling students include the opportunity to create a personalized website and an electronic portfolio showcasing their work in each of their courses throughout their program which can be used when interview for school counseling positions.
To meet NCATE requirements, Beginning Spring 2007, all instructors who teach courses with School Counseling students will receive a Taskstream account. All School Counseling candidates will be required to purchase a Task Stream account to complete the "tasks" or "critical tasks" for each course. The School Counseling graduate program is required to administer performance assessments of school counseling candidates in each course. This is essential for Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and National College Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE). Students can purchase Task Stream accounts online at www.taskstream.com or through the YSU Bookstore for an additional fee.
Certain assessments in gate keeping courses may be designated as "Critical Task" Performance Assessments. Until mastery is demonstrated on a designated "Critical Task", the school counseling candidate will not be permitted to pass through the pre-established gates associated with the School Counseling program. Each semester school counseling students will need to utilize a new code to utilize their Taskstream account (e.g., – Fall 2007 “F08SC”; Spring 2007 “SP08SC”; Summer 2008 “X08SC”). In addition, each semester, the program collects and compiles the following data related to School Counseling students/applicants: student dispositions; the GPA/MAT/GRE Scores of the program’s applicants; admission interview evaluations; Counseling Methods Evaluation; 21-Hour Review Form; Practicum I Final Supervision Summary; Counseling Session Evaluation (Practicum II and Internship); the Graduated Student Survey; and the Current Student Survey.
NORTH CENTRAL ASSOCIATION FOR COLLEGES & SCHOOLS (NCA):
NCA is an accrediting body for colleges and universities, including Youngstown State University. The purpose of the Association is to foster quality, encourage academic excellence, and improve teaching and learning. The Association encourages and supports cooperative relationships among schools, and colleges and universities that hold membership in the Association. Each year the Counseling Program prepares a report for the NCA.
General Education Requirement:
Instructors who teach COUN 1587 or COUN 1588 must grade the identified course projects on a rubric and send the completed Excel spreadsheet back to the Counseling Program Coordinator.
