  Dean's Welcome

Dean Phyllis Paul Photo

On behalf of the faculty, staff, students, and supporters of the College of Creative Arts and Communication (CCAC) at Youngstown State University, I am delighted to welcome you to our website and introduce you to the programs within our College.  For nearly a century, our distinguised and highly active faculty of artists and scholars has dedicated itself to helping students pursue their passions, develop their talents, and succeed in their educational and professional endeavors.  The College is also a vital cultural asset to the YSU campus, the Mahoning Valley, and the state of Ohio, hosting over 400 events annually.

The CCAC is comprised of four academic areas—the Departments of ArtCommunication,Theater and Dance, and the Dana School of Music—and two auxiliary units, the McDonough Museum of Art and the Office of Community Engagement and Events.  With 7 degrees in over 37 fields of study, students have the opportunity to develop depth in a primary concentration and breadth by exploring cross-disciplinary experiences in an extraordinarily creative environment.  They are guided by faculty, who are also working artists, researchers, and scholars at the top of their fields, through innovative curricula designed to impart the vital skills that will empower them for success in their chosen areas.

We welcome your interest and hope that you will take some time to explore our website and learn about our outstanding academic programs, opportunities, faculty, facilities, and everything else the College of Creative Arts and Communication has to offer.  The faculty, staff, and I welcome any questions you may have about our programs, and we look forward to seeing you here on the campus of YSU!

  Mission & Vision

Our Mission

The College of Creative Arts and Communication provides a dynamic learning environment in the creative and communication arts to strengthen and broaden the intellectual and cultural horizons of a diverse community.

The College is dedicated to:
  • Demonstrating the values and principles inherent to the arts and challenging students to experience and appreciate the various forms of artistic expression.

  • Recognizing scholarship and teaching as integral and interrelated activities of the College demonstrated by a faculty and staff of active artists and scholars, providing a lasting and sustainable contribution to aid students in achieving an enriched and fulfilled life.

  • Utilizing music, visual arts, speech communication, telecommunication, theater, and dance to present a highly visible presence reaching beyond the University community.

  • Creating an innovative environment that cultivates its faculty, staff and students to become leaders in their professional and civic lives.

Our Vision
The College seeks to be a distinguished center, nationally recognized for education in the fine and performing arts. As an outgrowth of that vision, we will continue to offer a varied selection of high quality programming in the creative arts. Central to this intention is the understanding that the creative and communication arts are expressions of our shared humanity, capable of building connections among people and cultures, exploring the human spirit in all of its nuances, revealing new perceptions of our past, present and future, and providing a humanizing force vital to a civil society.
