Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)

The Bachelor of Social Work degree (BSW) at Youngstown State University prepares students for entry into beginning, generalist social work practice.  BSW social workers are employed in a wide range of human service settings including mental health centers, health care settings, child welfare settings, schools, correctional institutions, family service and other profit and non-for-profit agencies.

The BSW program seeks to develop ethical, educated and trained social workers to improve the social functioning of people in a culturally diverse and complex society.  The program applies a perspective of human conditions that recognizes the reciprocal relationships between people and the environmental conditions in which they live and the strengths that exist in both people and their situational contexts.  Graduates of the program seek to solve problems using multiple-level systems and act in a wide range of professional roles.

The BSW degree program includes general education, pre-social work, and social work courses.  Among social work courses is a two semester social work field education internship taken in the senior year of the program.  This engagement provides students direct experience working in regional social service agencies under the supervision of professional social workers and is preparation for human services employment upon graduation

A BSW degree is necessary for licensing as an LSW (Licensed Social Worker) in the State of Ohio.  Licensing also requires successfully passing the social work licensing exam.  Visit the Ohio Social Work Licensing Board for additional information.

A BSW degree prepares students for future entry into Master of Social Work (MSW) programs.  Highly qualified BSW graduates (overall GPA of 3.25 or higher) may be eligible for admission to Advanced Standing status thereby reducing the time required for completion of the MSW degree.

The BSW program at Youngstown State University is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
