How to Hire a Student Worker at YSU
Make sure that the job you are hiring the student to do already exists. A position description must be approved in advance by the Office of Student Life. If you have questions about whether or not a student job already exists or if you need help in writing a position description, contact us at 330-941-4703.
Once you have a student job in place, you can post your open position on the Student Life website by contacting Melodie Provencher (x4703). Students who are interested in applying for the position will contact you directly. Employing departments manage their own hiring.
After you have interviewed applicants and made your decision, it is time to complete the paperwork. Please allow at least 10 working days for the process to be completed. DO NOT allow a student to work before the employment paperwork has been completely processed and you have received an approved start date from Student Life. Allowing students to work before their paperwork is processed is a violation of federal and state laws.
What forms do you need?
If the student has worked for YSU in the past...
Step 1:
Complete an On-Campus Student Employment Hourly Appointment form OR a Student Stipend Appointment form if the job is a stipend position.
Step 2:
Send the Hourly Appointment form directly to Financial Aid and Scholarships to be checked for Federal Work Study eligibility. Financial Aid will then forward the appointment form to Student Life to complete the process.
If the student has NEVER worked for YSU in the past...
Step 1:
Complete an On-Campus Student Employment Hourly Appointment form OR a Student Stipend Appointment form if the job is a stipend position.
Step 2:
Print out the document entitled (click on this title:) "Lists of Acceptable Documents" and give it to the student. Explain that the student will need to bring the appropriate ID to the Office of Student Life and complete an electronic I-9 before their employment paperwork can be processed.
Step 3:
Send the student, along with the appointment form completed in Step 1, to the Office of Student Life (Jones Hall, Room 3001). All additional paperwork--the I-9, OPERS, school district, and direct deposit forms--will be completed in the Office of Student Life.
