What is a Peer Mentor?

A Peer Mentor (or PM) is a Youngstown State University student who has been hired and trained to serve as a mentor and guide during a student's first year at Youngstown State University. Peer Mentors are required to have at least a 2.5 GPA and have at least 12 credit hours completed. Peer Mentors work as Orientation Leaders during the summer and have students sign contracts with them to extend their orientation during their entire first year of college.

Peer Mentors each work 20 hours a week during which they are available in their offices in the Center for Student Progress. Peer Mentors send copies of their hours to each student who signed a contract with them during Orientation.

Peer Mentors meet with first-year students weekly during appointments that last approximately 30 minutes.
