Q. Why should I get a bachelor degree in respiratory therapy? A. The advantages in completing a 4-year program in respiratory therapy are the additional opportunities that become available to practitioners holding what is generally considered a “professional level” degree. Individuals holding bachelor-degrees in respiratory therapy are better able to “fast track” into advanced clinical, managerial, educational, and marketing careers. In addition, the BSRC graduate also enters the workforce with additional technical certifications and skills not generally available for associate-degree graduates. Q. How can I see “first hand” what respiratory therapists do in the hospital setting? A. Feel free to contact the Program Director, Mary Yacovone, MEd, RRT at 330-941-1764 and she will put you in touch with local practitioners. Q. What can I expect to be paid as a Respiratory Therapist? A. The 2010 U.S. Department of Labor report states the median wage for RT's is $26.10/hour. Q. Can I get a job in respiratory therapy before I graduate from the program? A. Yes. Under the current Ohio Respiratory Care Board standards, students in the senior year of the YSU program can obtain a Limited Permit to work in area hospitals under the direction of a licensed practitioner. Many area hospitals hire students on a part-time basis before completion of their program.
