CLASS College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Youngstown State University   Sociology, Anthropology, and Gerontology   Gerontology

Gerontology is the interdisciplinary study of aging and is a rapidly growing field. According to the Census Bureau, there are now over 34 million people who are over the age of 65 and make up about 12 percent of the American population. Additionally, the aging of the Baby Boom generation will increase the ranks of older adults over the next four decades. This growing population translates into the need for more professionals educated in the field of gerontology. Virtually every professional will be in contact with our diverse and maturing population.

Specialties in gerontology as a major, or in conjunction with other disciplines such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, nursing, human ecology, law, and business, will give students an edge in working with this diverse and growing opportunity to work with older adults. Opportunities go beyond simply working with sick populations to include providing services, housing, and assistance to older adults. The gerontology program offers a Certificate in Applied Gerontology and a new major in Gerontology.
