YSU Recycling

About

The YSU Recycling Program was established under the Janitorial Services Department of Support Services in the 1990-1991 school year. Thanks to the Mahoning County Commissioners, the program received grant funds from their Solid Waste Division in 1999, with subsequent funding that continues currently. YSU’s Support Services Division also provides both financial and in-kind support.

The YSU Recycling Program is a member of the United States EPA WasteWise program, the Association of Ohio Recyclers (AOR), the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) and the Colleges and University Recycling Council (CURC).

In 2002, with technical assistance from Dump and Run, Inc., YSU was the first college or university in Ohio to implement a "Dump and Run" reuse collection event at the Residence Halls.

In 2003, YSU won the national U.S. EPA WasteWise University/College Partner of the Year award for our outstanding efforts in waste reduction through the student-run re:CREATE project. That same year, YSU also won the Ohio Department of Natural Resources DIVISION OF RECYCLING AND LITTER PREVENTION Community Pride and Partnership Award for the Ohio Recycles! Youth/School category.

In 2004, YSU received the national U.S. EPA WasteWise College/University Program Champion award, once again recognizing our unique efforts to divert waste from entering into a landfill.

In 2005, YSU received additional grant funds from the Mahoning County Commissioner’s Reuse and Recycling Program to expand the re:CREATE program, creating a full-time managerial position and increasing work within Mahoning County. The re:CREATE program serves both the campus and community. Non-hazardous, unwanted, reusable items such as Styrofoam egg cartons and peanuts, art supplies, craft oddities, and many others are prevented from entering the landfill by being diverted to schools and non-profit agencies that need them. In 2006, YSU became the first college or university in Ohio to compost food waste!
