Barbara J. Vankline-Shivers, mother, wife and activist in the local community, battled breast cancer for fourteen years. Her concern for others was demonstrated through her example, she was a medical technologist, a phlebotomy instructor, a volunteer for various organizations including Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Help Hotline, Adult Literacy Program, and Infant Child Care. She also founded a breast cancer support group for African-American women. Barbara earned her B.A. in Applied Science from YSU and a Doctorate in Naturopathy from Clayton college of Natural health in Birmingham, Alabama. Because of her love for education and desire to share her knowledge with individuals, her family established this scholarship to benefit African-American female students in the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services.
