Laboratory Safety

Working closely with academic departments, EOHS routinely inspects all science laboratories to determine whether they are in compliance with the University's  chemical hygiene plan* as mandated by OSHA.  Problem areas are discussed with department heads and corrective action is then taken to bring the area back into compliance.  In addition, EOHS also routinely tests all fume hoods on campus to assure that they are performing according to acceptable standards. The department also serves as the campus reference on chemical safety by maintaining a library and a computer data base of material safety data sheets on chemicals stored on campus.  All information concerning the University's chemical inventory is shared with the local fire department by way of computer hookup.  EOHS also oversees the University's chemical management center assuring that YSU properly orders, receives and stores chemicals on campus.
