Welcome to YSU's Department of Communication. Our website provides information about department programs and initiatives, majors and minors, and courses in Communication Studies and Telecommunication Studies. Our courses prepare students for careers in communication and mass media, public relations, sales, and so much more. Our graduates work in radio and television production, human resources, banking, government, education - you name it. Many of our graduates go on for graduate degrees in communication and related fields.

More importantly, we believe these courses help prepare people for effective relationships with others throughout life – personal and professional.

There are over 200 students majoring in Communication Studies and Telecommunication Studies at YSU. These students find many outlets to build on the communication skills they learn. For example, Lambda Pi Eta, a student communication honorary organization, recognizes our outstanding students and provides an opportunity for greater involvement and leadership. Homework Express, a live TV program dedicated to answering math questions, is produced twice a week by our telecommunication faculty, staff, and students. Opportunities for active involvement in online programming exist with YSU sports broadcasts, Light the Wick, and Rookery Radio – YSU’s first-ever, internet-only, student-run radio station.

In the Spring 2013, we launch our first graduate degree program in interdisciplinary communication - a collaborative effort with the departments of English and marketing.

Faculty members within the department are competent and caring teachers and mentors. They are active scholars engaged in their disciplines. Many hold interest in the study of mass media and new media, but other research interests include argumentation, organizational communication, interpersonal and intercultural communication, rhetoric, and research methods.

Our department is located in Bliss Hall within the College of Fine and Performing Arts. Here, you will find a medium-sized department with a warm and cheerful environment that puts students first. Our facilities include smart classrooms, audio and video labs, and a state of the art television studio.

I encourage you to explore the above links to discover more about the exciting teaching and research happening in our department. Follow me on Twitter and Friend me on Facebook to find out more about what's happening in YSU's Department of Communication.
