PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Youngstown State University is fully approved by the Ohio State Department of Education for the preparation of physical education teachers for public schools. The degree of Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in physical education leads to a license in multiage education.

Those students seeking upper-division admission in physical education must have achieved Beeghly College of Education upper-division status and must supply the Department of Human Performance and Exercise Science with written verification of this status. For more information concerning this requirement and for formal admission to the Department of Human Performance and Exercise Science please contact the main office in Room 307, Beeghly Center.

  EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
As a physical education graduate, with supporting studies where appropriate, you will enjoy a number of employment opportunities in areas such as teaching, coaching, community agencies and media. Through the Office of Career Services, physical education graduates from YSU typically have the opportunity to interview on campus with numerous prospective employers. Annual starting salaries generally meet or exceed the national average for graduating physical education teachers and professionals.

  DEGREE OPTIONS
The Department of Human Performance and Exercise Science offers two degree programs in physical education: the Bachelor of Science in Education, P-12 Physical Education Licensure degree leading to a teaching license in multiage education and the Bachelor of Arts (non-teaching) degree. The B.S. in Education program prepares students for teaching physical education in public and private schools. The BA program is intended for students seeking careers in recreation or sport-related commercial fields. Upon receipt of the baccalaureate degree, graduates are prepared for study on the graduate level in physical education or for employment in a variety of professions.

  FACILITIES
The Beeghly Physical Education Center is home to the exercise science program and houses classrooms, laboratories, a gymnasium with spectator seating for 7,500, a 50-meter swimming pool, a fitness center, and a rifle range.  The program maintains laboratories for exercise science and kinesiology.

The laboratory contains the newest technology, with an AEI Metabolic analysis unit, a Mortara Stress electrocardiogram system, interfaced with two a research- quality treadmills, a portable metabolic unit, a Lode electronically-braked cycle ergometer, a BIOPAC data acquisition system, electromyography equipment, five Monark cycle ergometers, a spirometer, hydrostatic weighing apparatus, a bioelectrical impedance analysis system, and skinfold calipers.

Adjacent to Beeghly Center is the Arnold D. Stambaugh Stadium and All-Sports Complex, which includes a 16,000-seat outdoor stadium, indoor classrooms, racquetball courts, a weight room, gymnasia, and sports medicine facilities.  Located outside the stadium are tennis courts, track and field facilities, and multipurpose areas for football, soccer, softball, and field hockey.

 

FACULTY
YSU maintains a faculty-student ratio of approximately 1:19, which is among the best of the state-affiliated universities in Ohio.

Full-time faculty in the Department of Human Performance and Exercise Science are teaching professionals, with wide ranges of experience to support a variety of student interests. The faculty members specialize in such diverse areas as exercise physiology, clinical exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, elementary and secondary teacher preparation, coaching, sport sociology, and program administration. 

With ongoing research studies in many of these areas, undergraduate students are encouraged to become part of a research team.  All full-time faculty members serve as academic advisors and are involved in every phase of instruction in the undergraduate programs.
