Dear Adviser,

You and your students have worked hard this year to keep your school community informed. Whether it was through a newspaper, video announcements, a literary magazine or a yearbook, you have invested countless hours into keeping your school community engaged.

We think it’s time that you and your students receive some recognition or, at least, compete for that recognition.

The Press Day event, May 7 at Youngstown State University, will include an hour-and-a-half personalized critique session just for your school. This will be followed by the annual awards ceremony.

This is not just an average awards ceremony.

This year, we will be awarding scholarships. Please urge your students to apply for one of several that will be awarded: The Sullivan/Shively Scholarship - $500 or the Anderson Scholarship - $3,000

We’ll be giving away significant money and we’ll be telling everyone about who won, who placed and who showed. You will be told which students have won so you can urge parents, principals, board of education members and superintendents to join us at the awards ceremony. However, you won’t be told what the student won, only that the student will be publicly recognized.

There are contests in several categories – from news reporting to sports photography from the best yearbook theme to the best newspaper website. The rules for entering are simple.

  • Fill out the general registration form. Use this form whether you are attending Press Day or merely sending in contest materials. You can see the fees for attendance and entering there.
  • Look around at the various competitions and scholarships. There are 20 individual writing awards ranging from Editorial Writing to Investigative Reporting. We also have several honors that can be won by entire staffs and then there are special recognitions for staff members who have made extraordinary contributions.
  • Fill out the entry forms for each individual contest that you are entering.
  • Send everything to me: Alyssa Lenhoff, DeBartolo Hall, Youngstown State University, Youngstown, OH 44555. I must have everything in-hand no later than April 15, so allow for sufficient delivery time. Also, please be sure to include a check or purchase order.

If you have any questions, please don’t be shy about calling or e-mailing me. My cell phone number is (330) 402-1016. My e-mail address is ajlenhoff AT ysu DOT edu.

Remember that space is limited, so register early to be guaranteed a spot.

If you are planning to attend, please note that we will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 11:45 a.m. The event will be in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. Busses can drop off students at the guardhouse on Elm Street, near the I-680 service road.
