Youngstown State Universit ’s Center for Environmental Sustainability invited 30 science and social studies teachers in
grades 7- 12 to participate in a free Interdisciplinary Sustainability Workshop in the summer of 2012.
The Sustainability Institute for Teachers was held June 18-22, 2012, plus two Saturdays during the 2012-2013 school year.
Science and social studies teachers in grades 7-12 from Trumbull and Mahoning Counties participated in the workshop.
- During this workshop teachers learned about sustainability from a variety of perspectives including guest and faculty speakers with expertise in chemistry, environmental studies, history, biology, economics, engineering, public policy, & more.
- Broad themes included energy, water, air, and land.
- Teachers participated in local field trips highlighting these themes (such as a solar energy company and a local organic farm).
- Teachers participated in interactive sessions related to teaching about sustainability in the classroom (meeting new Ohio Standards).
The concept of sustainability, absent in previous versions of the Ohio standards, is present in both social studies and science revised standards.
Sustainability has three nested components:
- economic
- social
- environmental
The workshop focused on all three components in an interdisciplinary approach.
We addressed these questions:
- What is environmental sustainability and how does it relate to what I teach?
- What is included in the new Ohio Standards?
- How does this benefit me and my students?
- Where do I find resources?
- Are there any local examples I can use in my classroom?
