Nicholas Paraska Scholarship

Nicholas Paraska Scholarship was created in 1982 by friends and colleagues to honor Nicholas Paraska for service as the dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology (now the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services).  It is awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement and need to a student completing an associate degree in one of the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services programs, School of Technology, Computer Information Systems or Information Techology programs in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and the Labor Studies program in the Warren P. Health-O-Rama Scholarship
Health-O-Rama Scholarship is a one year scholarship awarded to a student of sophomore rank or higher majoring in a health-related field.  Students must have a 3.2 GPA (Undergraduate) and 3.5 GPA (Graduate), demonstrate financial need and have graduated from high school  in Mahoning, Trumbull, or Columbiana County (OH) or in Mercer or Lawrence County (PA).  Selection is made by a committee of BCHHS  faculty through evaluation of applications.  The Health-O-Rama Application (MS Word format) is available below by clicking on the link.

Philip and Kathylynn Feld Scholarship
This scholarship was established to provide continuing education to students who have already earned an assoicate degree in one of the following fields of study:  Engineering Techology, Nursing, Medical Assisting Technology, Radiology Technology, Emergency Medical Technology, and Dietetics.  Must have a minimum 2.75 GPA.  Students who reside in Western Pennsylvania have first consideration; if there is no one meeting these criteria, it is open to any student.

The Barbara J. Vankline-Shivers Memorial Scholarship

Barbara J. Vankline-Shivers, mother, wife and activist in the local community, battled breast cancer for fourteen years.  Her concern for others was demonstrated through her example, she was a medical technologist, a phlebotomy instructor, a volunteer for various organizations including Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Help Hotline, Adult Literacy Program, and Infant Child Care.  She also founded a breast cancer support group for African-American women. Barbara earned her B.A. in Applied Science from YSU and a Doctorate in Naturopathy from Clayton college of Natural health in Birmingham, Alabama.  Because of her love for education and desire to share her knowledge with individuals, her family established this scholarship to benefit African-American female students in the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services.

Suzanne Marie Fornelli Memorial Scholarship in Nursing

The Suzanne Marie Fornelli Memorial Nursing Scholarship at Youngstown State University was established in 2011 by the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in memory of Suzanne Marie Fornelli RN, BSN, with the intent to foster the development of individuals with the sincere desire to become Registered Nurses.  Mrs. Fornelli’s exemplary character, commitment and compassion in caring for patients, respect for human life, and dedication to the nursing profession is unsurpassed.  The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance for academics to individuals seeking to develop in themselves the same spirit of excellence in nursing as demonstrated by Mrs. Fornelli.

Mrs. Fornelli graduated in 1968 from St. Benedict Academy of Pittsburgh.  After graduating, she went to UPMC School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, then received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the Shenango campus of Penn State University, Sharon.  Suzanne for 23 years, was an operating room nurse, became the director of nursing at Surgery Center at Southwoods, Boardman, Ohio, retiring in December 2008 as an administrator of the surgery center.

James and Coralie Centofanti Memorial Scholarship
The James and Coralie Centofanti Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 through a gift provided by the Centofanti Charitable Trust.  The scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students in health and human service majors who have expressed a sincere desire to serve vulnerable population groups upon graduation. Student's must:
  1. Financial Need; Applicants must demonstrate financial need verified by a completed FAFSA;
  2. Undergraduate scholarship applicants must be full-time, of junior rank, and hold a 3.0 (minimum) grade point average.  Graduate scholarship applicants must be full-time, have completed 15 hours, and hold a 3.25 (minimum) grade point average;
  3. Applicants (both undergraduate and graduate) must be a declared major in the College of Health and Human Services;
  4. All applicants must complete an essay describing their commitment to working with vulnerable populations

    Additional Scholarship Parameters:
    • Award dollars must be applied to tuition;
    • Scholarships are non-renewable
