Scholarship Opportunities:Students are eligible to apply for a scholarship if working on a first master’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.6 for applicants with 9 or more hours of YSU graduate credit, or 4.0 for applicants with 6 or more hours of YSU graduate credit. Applications are due between the 1st & 10th day of the previous semester. Applications received before the first day or after the tenth day will not be considered. New students in Spring 2013 would be eligible to apply between the first and tenth day of the Summer 2013 semester for Fall 2013 scholarship money.

The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement makes teachers who currently hold the Early Childhood License P-3 license more marketable. It adds on grades 4-5 to the Early Childhood license, which allows school districts greater flexibility in teacher assignments. The endorsement focuses on pedagogy, methods, and content for students in grades 4-5.Important Note: In order to be recommended for the Endorsement, you must complete all courses and pass the Praxis II Elementary Education Content Knowledge Exam #0014 (for paper-pencil based) or #5014 (for computer based).

Dr. Victoria Kress elected as the 2013-2014 Ohio Counseling Association President-Elect.
OCA Announces New President-Elect
The Ohio Counseling Association is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Victoria Kress as the 2013-2014 OCA President-Elect. Dr. Kress earned her doctorate degree in Counselor Education from the University of Akron. She is a professor, counseling clinic director, and the director of the clinical mental health, and addictions counseling programs at Youngstown State University. She is also an adjunct faculty member at John Carroll University. She has over 20 years of clinical experience working in various settings such as community mental health centers, hospitals, residential treatment facilities, private practice, and college counseling centers. She specializes in counseling child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault victims, and in treating people who have unresolved trauma. She volunteers as a court appointed guardian ad litem who advocates for abused and neglected children. She is passionate about supporting counselors in Ohio and she been an OCA committee chair or member since 1998 (e.g., Ethics Committee Chair, Education and PR Committee chair, Archives Chair, Journal Task Force Chair, Finance Committee member). At present, she serves on the OCA Government Relations Committee, and she is an editorial board of OCA’s journal, the Journal of Counselor Practice. She has published over 65 refereed articles, numerous book chapters, and has co-authored a book on ethics issues which relate to counselors’ use of the DSM. She recently completed two terms as a governor appointed member of the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board, where she also served as an Ethics Liaison. She was the 2008 recipient of the ACES Distinguished Mentor Award, the 2011 recipient of the ACES Leadership Award, the 2012 recipient of the ACA Counselor Educator Advocacy Award, and has received a number of YSU and OCA awards including the 2011, OCA Counselor of the Year Award, and the 2012 OCA Legislative Advocacy Award. She is the current president of Chi Sigma Iota International, and the chair of the ACA’s Graduate Student Committee.
