Highlights of the Conference Program.


 
Each year the Beeghly College of Education recognizes a group of outstanding alumni from the college. This years celebration will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 6:00 in Beeghly College of Education McKay Auditorium.

The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer and after-school enrichment through a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components:

  1. High Quality Academic Enrichment
  2. Intergenerational Servant Leadership Development
  3. Social Action and Civic Engagement
  4. Parent and Family Involvement
  5. Nutrition, Health and Mental Health

The program site for this project is Tabernacle Baptist Church, located at 707 Arlington Street, on the Northside of Youngstown, Ohio.

The availability of the program is contingent upon the receipt of necessary funding for the project. The project is scheduled to begin June 16 thru July 25, 2014. To be considered, you must meet the following eligibility requirements.

  • You must be an upper division student, juniors, seniors, and recently graduated education students, are welcome to apply
  • Possess an overall 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Provide an unofficial transcript, verifying the student’s GPA
  • Must provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member
  • Must write a 250 word essay, outlining the student’s ability to fulfill the principals of Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School’s philosophy and curriculum
  • The student must be interviewed  by a review committee, from the Beeghly College of Education, as well as a committee from the host site location – Tabernacle Baptist Church
  • The student must agree to participate fully in the national training sessions, which commence on June 1-6, 2014, at the Alex Haley Farm in Clinton, Tennessee.
  • The student must be available to work the hours of 8:30 am -3:30 pm
  • Must provide proof of voter registration
  • The servant interns will receive a stipend which includes travel expenses, totaling $1400 per intern
  • The applications must be received by  the deadline, March 24, 2014

The Beeghly College of Education at Youngstown State University is sponsoring the 11th Annual Educational Research Exchange (ERE) to be held on Friday April 18, 2014. 

The ERE is an annual mini-conference that provides an opportunity for students to share their research endeavors in a collegial atmosphere. This year’s conference is sponsored by Youngstown State University, and supported by Cleveland State University, Kent State University, and the University of Akron.

The Youngstown State University School Psychology Program is accepting student applications for the third YSU School Psychology Program cohort to begin in July of 2014.  Candidates will find that this school psychology graduate program provides comprehensive training which leads to an Ohio license as a school psychologist.  Those with a background in psychology, education, and other related fields are strongly encouraged to apply. Application deadline is January 29, 2014.

An information session (to describe the program and answer questions) will be held soon. Check back for the location, date and time.

Web-Based for Summer 2014

The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement makes teachers who currently hold the Early Childhood License P-3 license more marketable. It adds on grades 4-5 to the Early Childhood license, which allows school districts greater flexibility in teacher assignments. The endorsement focuses on pedagogy, methods, and content for students in grades 4-5.

Important Note:
In order to be recommended for the Endorsement, you must complete all courses and, starting September 1, 2013, pass the
Pearson Assessment exam for the Ohio Early Childhood Generalist (4th – 5th Endorsement).

Subtest 1  -  018 passing score of 220 or higher
Subtest 2  -  019 passing score of 220 or higher

Adding the Endorsement:

To have the EC Generalist Endorsement added to your license you will need to apply online with the ODE. As of January 1st, 2014, the State moved to the submission of all applications online.  After you successfully pass the State of Ohio designated Pearson exam, visit this Ohio Department of Education webpage for instructions about applying. IMPORTANT – You will need to indicate that you were trained at YSU and you will need YSU’s code which is: 063156. The code for the EC Generalist endorsement is 185000. The fee is $20.00. The memorial bench for Dr. Philip Ginnetti, BCOE Dean from 2002-2010, was dedicated Wednesday, July 31 at 10 am and 3 pm.

Congratulations on the selection of Eta Chapter as the 2013-14 recipient of the Chi Sigma Iota, International, Outstanding Chapter Individual Program Award! This is indeed an honor, and a tribute their consistent and effective leadership and mentoring of students in the chapter. The CSI Awards Ceremony will be held in Honolulu on March 28th at 5 pm.
