Dennis Morawski, Chair Social Work DepartmentWelcome to the Department of Social Work!

In the world of physics the equation: E =MC2 revolutionized our understanding of the natural world….

In the social world the equation: SW = E + I(h)2 can revolutionize what can be done to improve the quality of life for people where:

SW = the profession of social work;

E = the energy of those involved in the helping;

I = the intelligence required to know how best be of help to others;

H2 = the heart and compassion due to those in need.

The social work profession has a long-standing tradition of delivering the energy, intelligence, and heart to make a difference in the lives of people.  Through the efforts and energy of social workers, people who might otherwise suffer or go without suffer less and have what they need.  Because of the knowledge and skills social workers use to help people, complex human problems are addressed responsibly using the best methods available.   And through the expression of humane values held by members of the social work profession, people served are treated with compassion and dignity.

Social workers are committed to helping people adapt with a keen eye on the environment and the opportunities that exist to make this adaptation possible.   Social workers work with a broad range of people and the concerns they bring and are interested in the actions that will improve their situations. Social workers are employed in a broad range of organizations both private and governmental.

Are you ready for a career that is challenging and offers a wide range of rewards?  The YSU Department of Social Work is a place where careers in human service work begin… and are continued through its three degree programs:

            -a 2 year Associate of Applied Science in Social Services Technology degree program;

            -a 4 year Bachelor of Social Work degree program;

            -a 60-hour Master of Social Work degree program (may be completed in 2, 3 or 4 years).

            -a 39-hour Advanced Standing MSW Program.

Through Department of Social Work programs students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to offer assistance to individuals, families, organizations, and communities in the context of a human services career. If you are seeking a program to prepare for a human services career where YOUR energy can be channeled to expand YOUR intelligence about helping for the expression of YOUR compassion for others, I invite you to explore YSU’s social work programs.
