Strategic Planning:
In summer 2010, YSU President Cynthia E. Anderson convened a 52-member steering committee--chaired by Provost Ikram Khawaja and Vice President for Finance and Administration Eugene Grilli--to develop a strategic plan to lead the university to the year 2020. The committee consists of YSU trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, and students, as well as members of the community.
“This [strategic planning] process will provide our university community, as well as our surrounding community partners, the opportunity to consider broad issues of institutional directions, to develop goals and priorities, and to subject their priorities to open discussion, evaluation, and debate,” Anderson said in a letter to members of the committee.
The resulting plan, notes YSU Board of Trustees Chair Scott R. Schulick, will guide every activity of the institution and help us align priorities, investments, and initiatives as we face the inevitable challenges and opportunities of the next 10 years. (See "On Track for the Future: A Case Study in Strategic Finance," an article by Cynthia Anderson and Scott Schulick in the current issue of Trusteeship magazine.)
Thanks for Participating!
Through focus groups, open forums, and a variety of survey instruments, the four strategic planning subcommittees sought wide input on four "cornerstones" of the plan. Those cornerstones are financial and other accountability and sustainability of the institution; student success; transition to the urban research mission; and regional engagement (see links across the top of the page, below the Youngstown State University logo).
Below is a link to the framework and core of the plan, which the committees developed with your input and that of the Board of Trustees and the President's Cabinet:
The Board of Trustees approved the basic framework and core on December 15, 2010. The members of the strategic planning committees are grateful for the care with which you read drafts and the input you provided!
Previous Opportunities for Input
- Members of the external community were encouraged to attend one of four open forums listed on the attached downloadable schedule (Word Document). Although the deadline for responding anonymously to questions for the external community was Oct. 18, you may still download the questions.
- Members of the K-12 community participated in a focus group on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, in McKay Auditorium in the Beeghly College of Education.
- Members of the internal campus community were invited to respond anonymously to a series of focus-group questions until Oct. 11, 2010. Although the deadline for submitting responses to the questions has passed, you may still download the questions.
November 1 Message from the Strategic Planning Committee Chairs
On behalf of the 2020 Strategic Plan Steering Committee, we thank those of you who participated in focus groups, online forums, and surveys. Thanks to your willingness to contribute ideas and information, the committee was able to obtain input from a cross-section of campus groups and the community. The input we received helped to shape the framework for the strategic plan.
